John Coltrane recorded several versions of the Billy Strayhorn classic Lush Life. This painting was most inspired by his instrumental version, found on the 1961 album of the same title. It’s a 14-minute exercise in bittersweet reflection. Recorded in 1957 and ‘58, it’s hard to believe he was just about 30 years old at the time, achieving the arch tone of a jaded man of the world ;-) The vocal version on John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman (1963) is also a real treat.

My paintings are directly inspired by the experience of music and its effect on all the senses. By listening carefully and repeatedly, the songs develop as visions in the mind’s eye. This image combines with emotion and memory, interpreted and translated onto the canvas as compositions of movement, color, and rhythm.
